Sony Reader Touch Edition from Borders

Posted by: Tammy | Comments (3)
Sony Reader Touch

Sony Reader Touch

I recently got the chance to review the Sony Reader Touch Edition at Borders and let me just say it is one of the coolest techie gadgets I’ve come across in a long time!

Just ask SGT Daddy – I’m not one big on “reading ” ! (well except blogs and websites of course !) I could definitely see me using this for personal and business ! I can’t wait to get mine!!!*

I really love their open format technology so that you can order books and also open various other documents like PDF’s and even non-copyrighted MP3 files. It also comes in 3 awesome colors – Black, Silver and red)

Here are just SOME of the features from the Borders website -

Elegant 6 inch display with touch screen navigation
Carry thousands of your favorite books3
Freehand highlighting and annotation
Access a wide number of online bookstores
Thin, light, highly portable design
Paper-like display for easy, natural reading
Two full weeks of reading on a single batterycharge
Built-in Oxford American English e-Dictionary
Intuitive eBook Library software for PC and Mac
5 adjustable font sizes to customize your reading experience

There are so many uses for a product like this but it would be perfect for two specific segments of the population: the military as well as the low-vision community.

For the military- this would be perfect. Soldiers and other military service members already carry around so much gear and armor. (for the obvious reasons), they certainly couldn’t pack books in their bags  too.  They don’t have the extra space in their “rooms” for lots of books and there certainly isn’t a local Borders in their area to get said Books.

The E-Reader is perfect for them . They can download 350 of their favorite books to take with them when they do have their “down time”

In case you don’t know – our oldest daughter, Kiersten,  has some low vision issues. The reader is PERFECT for her! She can enlarge the font on a book or document with the touch of her finger. She can also listen to audio files on their too. She tested it out with me and it was super easy for her to use . (She’s 11 by the way )

Congrats to Borders and Sony for coming out with a superior product! It is definitely going to change the way people think about “books” especially military families. Just think of all the extra space in your house if you put your books on this Reader… not to mention less to worry about during those PCS moves!!!

Stay tuned because TOMORROW will be all about how YOU can win one Sony Reader Touch for your military service member!!

*Full disclosure- I will be compensated for my review of this product by Borders by receiving a Sony Reader Touch Edition. This has in no way affected by decision one way or another.

Thank You Sears!

Day 11 - My new Flip Video Camera

I guess you could say that I’m a “Sears brat “! You see , my dad worked for Sears for 30+ years and I spent lots of time in a Sears Store as a kid!  : ) Heck I even worked there myself  in the 90’s and have shopped there a lot over the years as an adult.

A couple of months ago, I signed our family up for the Sears’ Heroes at Home program. It is a program created to give back to military families.

Over the course of 3 months , we received gift cards worth a total of $322.00

It was a much appreciated and welcomed gift.

Since this was all extra $$ that we certainly weren’t expecting to receive, we bought stuff for the house, a Wii Spongebob game for the girls and a Flip video camera (which I’ve wanted for a REALLY long time)

I have to say this camera is the coolest handheld camera I’ve used in a long time. It’s so easy to use Beck can use it with ease. It’s completely plug in pay… there is a USB connector built into the camera.(yes video is coming very soon )

So a BIG heartfelt thank you to Sears (and all those that donated to the program) !! You guys do so much for our military and their families!

Keep up the great work.

Avatar Reviewed

Posted by: Tammy | Comments (1)
written by SGT Daddy —
graphic courtesy of 20th Century FoxAvatar is about how the indigenous people of planet Pandora prevent a corporation from lining it’s pockets with a more precious than diamonds substance. The natives prevent the mining by simply existing there. It’s obvious through the narrative of the story that any negotiations have failed up to this point.

A limited amount of time remains before the mining equipment will reach the geological hot spot and this time is all that remains for negotiation.

We are introduced to Jake Sully, Marine, who has lost the use of his legs. He is asked by the evil corporation to replace his now dead brother by piloting his Avatar.

In the movie an Avatar is the body of one of the 8 ft natives controlled by a human, which allows for easier acceptance and the ultimate goal of infiltration in to the Alien population. It’s an opportunity for Jake to be useful again. He accepts. He soon encounters one of the locals (Neytiri) which leads to him being schooled in the ways of the Na’vi. He starts out only wanting anything that might be used to negotiate the relocation of the natives so that the path is cleared for mining.

Naturally, his sensibilities change as he gets to know the Na’vi, Neytiri, and the planet Pandora. You enjoy the ride from Jakes’ perspective. As you are introduced to each new set piece you can’t help but be wowed by the visuals.

Unlike the last 3 Star Wars movies and Superman movies …  the computer effects are not simply there to look cool, they are there to introduce you to the World and they are very convincing. I guarantee you have never seen visuals like this before especially ones that contribute to the story like those in Avatar.

This is by no means a perfect movie. One way I gauge a movie is whether my wife, Tammy(aka ArmyHousehold6) , will like it. I’m stumped. I have a 50/50 chance of finishing this film with her on the sofa once it hits DVD. I think she would think it’s either weird or stupid.

I think she might think seeing 8 ft aliens for 2 and half hours is goofy no matter how convincing they are. Then again,  I think she would enjoy the love story and the action. Some people may not like the typical evil corporation or a few lines of dialogue that will undoubtedly sound familiar from recent years.

I’m a conservative and I really enjoyed this film but I am a huge fan of director James Cameron. Ultimately,  I honestly think you have to see the movie to see what the hubbub is about. I think the film may change cinema forever. It might very well be this generations’ Star Wars in its influence.

Posted by: Tammy | Comments (2)

I don’t normally blog about things I cook or bake (only because there is usually lots of OTHER stuff to blog about ). I was so proud of this one I just have to share with all of you !

I decided to try making some beer bread from scratch  – tried it at a craft show and it was soooooo good!

Here is the final outcome :

picture taken with my cell phone .. sorry it's fuzzy!

I think it turned out looking pretty darn good considering our resident baker (aka SGT Daddy) wasn’t here to tell me what I was doing wrong/right. : )

Want the recipe – let me know! (sorry all samples are GONE)

Camosock

Posted by: Tammy | Comments (2)

christmasBannerI was recently approached by Bob Gilead of Camosock.com telling me of his company!I was instantly intrigued.  I thought it was just an awesome  idea to create stockings out of old military uniforms.

Bob even sent a FREE one to us for SGT Daddy!

Also if you have adopted servicemembers then this is a great addition to their gift boxes! ( don’t have one – click here to adopt one!)

The Navy, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard and National Guard Christmas stockings are new additions to the Original U.S. Marine CAMOSOCK. All are expertly crafted from the digital uniform fabric worn by each branch of the Armed Forces. All are trimmed in scarlet piping with an embroidered coordinating name tape above the front pocket.

Overall they are 19″ in length and 9″ wide at the top cuff providing ample room for holiday gifts. The front pocket is a great place for a surprise picture, personal note or gift card.

Speaking of Christmas, don’t forget the deadline for packages to be shipped oversears is December 12th.

Here are some tips for what to put in the stockings –

- Individual packets of hot chocolate, cider or hot soup mix…
- Candy (bite sized, individually wrapped, all kinds)
- AT&T Phone Cards
- Small puzzle books
- Small, signed Holiday cards from you and your families (include your name and address!)
- Cigarettes / Cigars
- Books, DVD’s , Video games (current titles are greatly appreciated)
- Magazines
- Microwave food items (popcorn, all-in-one pan microwave deserts, heat & eat soups, etc.)
- Cereal bars
- Granola Bars
- Home baked goods
- Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) Gift Cards
-
Pre-paid gift cards or gift certificates from American Express
, Visa, Amazon.com, or from specific stores – Best Buy, Staples, Barnes & Noble, Circuit City, etc.) These soldiers have a range of things they need or want over the course of their deployments…
- pack of Christmas/Holiday cards for them to send to their friends/family/loved ones.

Also – don’t forget about Christmas decorations! Look around your house and find something for the troops! You can send small christmas trees, lights, ornaments (make sure they are shatterproof), decor, etc.

To find out more about the Camosock or to order yours – please visit their website and tell them that ArmyHousehold6 sent ya!

Although this is a sponsored post from Camosock.com – that in no way affects my opinion of the review!

Project 365 - Day22

Project 365 - Day22

Halo3 ODST was release yesterday and I picked up SGT Daddy’s copy from Target today. I saw them playing the demo at Target today and it looked AWESOME!  (oh how I wish I had an Xbox here at the house – SGT Daddy took it to A-stan)

I was excited to see that there was a free download  that came with it  to play as SGT Johnson (he’s my favorite character in Halo next to MasterChief ) but the KICKER is that you have to download it by January 2010. SGT Daddy won’t be able to download that downrange and doesn’t come back till way after  that date. What’s up with that Xbox LIVE??? (unless someone wants to send me a Xbox 360 so I can do it for him… I”m just saying )

Today I got a special package from the UPS Guy and it was from none other than SGT Daddy. I had a feeling he was up to something because he kept asking me if I had checked the mail.

The package was a “Pajamas Gram ” from pajamasgram.com. They are the cutest girly camo pj’s I’ve ever seen.
