The road starts here

Like I wrote earlier today.. its been a crazy couple of days. It seems like all of a sudden everything is happening RIGHT NOW!
Friday in my opinion was the busiest day EVER in my life but felt like we had finally started down the road of Deployment. We had the 4th Brigade Casing Ceremony in the morning. (Casing – the seal up the brigade colors/flag until they arrive in Afghanistan) It was filled with the usual Army pomp and circumstance. They had a ton of people there including members of the Vietnam War 12th Infantry Regiment. They highlighted a few of the Veterans including a Sergeant Major who was a POW in Vietnam for 6 years. It was pretty cool.. the entire crowd gave him a standing ovation. (something I’m sure he never received when he came back home )
I was doing pretty good and held it together at the ceremony until the Brigade Commander began talking about going off to war. It’s not like I didn’t know that already but that when someone else said it , it made it sound real and official. I always cry at these types of things… no matter if it includes SGT Daddy or not.
After the casing ceremony, it was time for the Brigade “picnic”. I use the word picnic lately. It was so cold and overcast, it was horrible. The only good thing was the free beer, courtesy of Miller Beer. It was so cold .. we had 1 beer and left. We finally ate lunch at the PX just SGT Daddy and I … so it was sort of nice.
We have a month or so before SGT Daddy has to leave, so I’ll be updating frequently on the road up to The BIG D (deployment). This will be a year-long post series (or however long the deployment turns out to be) which I hope to turn into my 2nd book when all is said and done.

I can’t imagine how high emotions must be running now that you are heading towards the big D. I’ll definitely be praying for Dan as it’s time for him to head out and while he’s there. And you know I’ll be here for you – I only hope I can do as good of a job giving advice as you did to me when I was going through things with Seth. I think we’ll have to start having some Friday night Virtual Pubs
